Coach John's background
LTRSURF says Coach John has spent more than 25 years as a surf instructor, surf coach, professional surfer and surf contest judge. That judging background shows in the coaching program, which uses video review and mock heats.
Lessons versus coaching
Lessons are for first-timers and beginners still learning the basics. The school says one hour is usually plenty to get you up and riding, and a 2-hour lesson or a couple of 1-hour lessons will have most people comfortable surfing on their own. Coaching is for intermediate to professional surfers working on maneuvers, wave selection and contest strategy.
LTRSURF also says it is approved to work with local charter schools including Pacific Coast Academy, Cabrillo Point Academy and Sage Oak Charter School.
Oceanside Harbor for learners
Oceanside Harbor's jetties shape sandbars and give some shelter from wind, and the beach picks up both northwest and south swells. Our Oceanside Harbor forecast is calibrated against the Oceanside offshore buoy. For a first lesson, look for 1–3 ft and a Poor-to-Fair rating; save the punchier Fair-to-Good days for coaching.
Who it's best for
First-timers who want a short, focused lesson, charter-school families, and competitive surfers who want a coach with judging experience.
