Southwestern College’s aquatic center
Crown Cove is part of Southwestern College. Its program extends beyond surfing to paddling, sailing and boating education, with activities on San Diego Bay and the Pacific. This range makes the center useful for families who want to introduce a child to several ways of spending time on the water.
Surfing within an aquatic-adventure program
The published 2026 summer aquatic camp serves ages 7–16 and combines surfing with paddling, sailing and team activities. One-on-one or small-group instruction is arranged by contacting the center, which can discuss a program built around your goals. Ask specifically about surf instruction when making an inquiry.
A base between bay and ocean
Crown Cove’s Silver Strand location serves both bay and ocean activities. A calm paddling area and an ocean surf lesson have different conditions and requirements, so confirm the activity location rather than assuming that every session happens in the same water.
Silver Strand: two kinds of water
Crown Cove sits on the Silver Strand, the narrow sand spit between the open Pacific and San Diego Bay, and that geography explains the whole program. On the bay side, water is flat and protected, which suits paddling, sailing and first balance drills. On the ocean side, the Strand is a long, straight beach break that faces southwest. We don't run a separate forecast for the Strand itself, so our closest reference is Coronado Beach, a few miles north, which works on swells from roughly south to west and usually breaks 2–6 ft.
That ocean exposure means the Strand gets the full force of summer south swells, while winter northwest swells are partly blocked by Point Loma, so winter days are often smaller here than at beaches north of the bay. For a camper, the practical upshot is simple: a calm bay day says nothing about the surf. Check the Coronado Beach forecast for size and wind, and look at the tide. Coronado-area sandbars tend to break best from mid to high tide, when waves spill gently instead of dumping on a steep low-tide shore. On days that are too big or too windy, programs like this can move the session to the bay.
Who it’s best for
Consider Crown Cove for a child interested in several water sports or for a group looking for customized instruction. If you want a short, surfing-only lesson, ask the center to confirm that format, its duration and the current fee before planning your visit.
Local tips before you go
Use the center’s directions and parking information for arrival. Youth-camp registration includes a parent packet; check the current requirements and submit the requested forms. Confirm the current season’s dates rather than relying on the published 2026 summer schedule.
Check the surf before your session
For a surfing activity, ask the center for the ocean meeting point before checking conditions. For bay-based activities, follow the center’s wind and weather guidance. Review current County water-quality postings for the assigned location.
