Individual coaching with Amy Williamson
Amy Williamson describes coaching since the 1990s and working with surfers from early learning through competition. Her Mindful Surf Method brings technique, movement, breathing and ocean awareness into the same conversation. Women are central to her coaching community, and she also works with male surfers and young athletes.
What a lesson looks like
Sessions are organized around your goals and the conditions of the day. They may focus on positioning, wave selection, confidence or technical changes, with video analysis discussed where appropriate. The service page asks clients to inquire about equipment rather than assuming a board and wetsuit are supplied.
A session-based location, rather than a fixed shop
The coaching location is determined around the student’s needs. Confirm the beach, arrival instructions and equipment with Amy before leaving home. The flexibility lets the location serve the coaching objective instead of making every student use the same break.
Matching the beach to the surfer
Sea Love Surf picks a beach for each student, and San Diego County has a wide range to choose from. South County beaches such as Coronado and Imperial Beach are partly shielded from winter northwest swells by Point Loma, so they're often the smallest options in winter and the most exposed in summer south swells. Central San Diego, from Ocean Beach to Pacific Beach, faces west and picks up most swells. La Jolla Shores sits beside a deep submarine canyon and is usually the softest beach in the county. North County beaches such as Moonlight State Beach in Encinitas face more to the west-southwest and pick up both swell seasons.
In our break data, the most forgiving beaches for a first session are La Jolla Shores (1–4 ft, mid tide), Moonlight State Beach (1–4 ft, mid tide) and Coronado (mid to high tide). Pacific Beach and Mission Beach are all-levels beach breaks with a slightly larger 2–5 ft range. Reefs such as Windansea, Bird Rock and Swami's need more experience and shouldn't be the first stop for a beginner. If you're booking private coaching, share your goals and look at forecasts for two or three candidate beaches together. On a given morning, the best learning beach is usually the one showing the smallest size and lightest wind, not the best surf rating.
Who it’s best for
Consider Sea Love Surf if you want continuity with one coach and an approach that addresses how you feel and move as well as what the board does. A small group may suit friends with compatible goals; discuss abilities before sharing a session.
Local tips before you go
Explain your current skill level and one or two goals before booking. Ask what equipment to bring and whether filming is part of the planned session. Save the final meeting location, since there is no single public check-in address for all coaching.
Check the surf before your session
Review conditions at the beach selected for your session. Use the forecast as a conversation with your coach about the objective and your comfort, rather than deciding on a different break without discussing it.
