A progression program built around ocean awareness
The program’s about page introduces coach Kevin and describes a background in local surfing and athletic training. Step Up Surf focuses on intermediate and advanced development, including how surfers prepare, read waves and make choices in the lineup. The site provides only Kevin’s first name, so no surname is assigned here.
What a coaching session works on
The published approach combines a pre-surf warm-up with water education and analyzed feedback. Topics include paddling, reading waves, duck diving, setting a line and crowd awareness. Photo or video recording is offered as an option; confirm how footage and review will be handled in your session.
Choose a break for your present ability
Step Up Surf advertises coaching across San Diego County. A flexible location should support the skill you are working on, rather than simply taking you to the most challenging break. Agree on the beach and the session objective with the coach.
Breaks to progress on, from Imperial Beach to Oceanside
Step Up Surf coaches intermediate and advanced surfers, and San Diego's coastline offers a clear progression ladder. Beach breaks such as Pacific Beach, Mission Beach and Tamarack in Carlsbad are good places to work on take-offs and bottom turns, with our profiles showing 2–5 ft ranges and the best shape from low to mid tide. Step up from there and you hit reef and point setups. Cardiff Reef, rated all levels in our data with a 2–6 ft range, offers a soft, predictable peak with both lefts and rights, a classic place to learn to read a reef.
Next up are the more demanding reefs. Our profiles rate Seaside Reef intermediate to advanced, while Windansea, Bird Rock, Swami's and Sunset Cliffs are advanced spots that start working around 3 ft and can handle much bigger swells. Swami's and Sunset Cliffs are best on west to northwest swells, so they are mostly winter breaks; Windansea and Bird Rock respond to swells from south to west. Oceanside Pier and Harbor round out the north end with jetties and punchy sandbars. For coaching, the useful forecast numbers are the swell period (12 s+ for reefs to come alive), direction and tide. Most San Diego reefs prefer low to mid tide. Check two or three of these forecasts together when booking so your session lands on the break that fits your next step.
Who it’s best for
This program fits a surfer who is comfortable in the water, has surfed before and is ready to work on progression. The contact page explicitly excludes first-time lessons from its prerequisites and asks students to have their own board and wetsuit.
Local tips before you go
Bring your own surfboard and wetsuit, and describe your current abilities accurately in the consultation. Ask about the fee, duration and video arrangements before reserving. A clear example of a problem—such as wave selection or your first turn—helps focus the discussion.
Check the surf before your session
Once the beach is agreed, consider the forecast alongside the skill objective. Tell the coach about any limits on wave size or ocean confidence so the session can be planned around them.
