Coaching led by Jake Halstead
Jake Halstead is identified as Beyond Surf SD’s founder and surf coach. His biography describes growing up in La Jolla, competing internationally and moving into coaching. The program serves a wide range of levels, with an emphasis on how the surfer moves and uses the board.
What a lesson looks like
Surf classes include a beach warm-up, water-safety instruction and coaching in the water. The class page lists soft boards and wetsuits as included. Instruction addresses board position, paddling and the pop-up while also introducing how tides, swell, wind and currents affect a session.
Choose the setting for the session
The published surf-class program identifies Coronado, while the broader business also offers individual coaching. Confirm the exact meeting beach and the session type together; beginner instruction and performance coaching can call for different conditions.
Picking the right Coronado day
Beyond Surf SD's habit of scheduling close to the session date makes more sense once you know how Coronado behaves. The beach is shadowed from much of the winter northwest swell by Point Loma, so it can go from almost flat to fun with a single south swell in summer. A booking made weeks out can land on a lake or on a day that's too big for a beginner; a booking made a day or two out can be matched to the forecast.
Here is what to look for on our Coronado Beach page. Size: for a first lesson, 1–3 ft is plenty, and our profile shows Coronado usually works up to about 6 ft. Swell direction: south to west swells reach the beach best, so a pure northwest swell may leave Coronado small even when the rest of the county is pumping. Tide: mid to high tide usually gives gentler, longer rides here, while a low tide on a steep sandbar can dump on the inside. Wind: the morning is typically lightest. If you're booking individual coaching instead of a beginner class, the same forecast helps in reverse: a slightly bigger, clean day with a longer period is when coaching on turns and positioning pays off most.
Who it’s best for
Consider the surf classes for an introduction with equipment supplied. More experienced surfers can inquire about individual coaching with specific technique goals. If you want Jake personally as your coach, confirm that arrangement rather than assuming every booking assigns the founder.
Local tips before you go
Ask about the timing of booking confirmation before planning a fixed travel itinerary. The website describes scheduling close to the session date to account for conditions. For Coronado lessons, include the stated surcharge in your budget and decide separately whether you want photos.
Check the surf before your session
Once Beyond Surf confirms the meeting beach, check its surf outlook. Tell the coach whether your goal is a first ride or technical progression so the session’s conditions can be considered against that goal.
