Christian’s approach to surf instruction
Progressive Surf Academy identifies Christian as its owner and describes his teaching background with Sunset Suratt Surf School on Oahu. Its instruction combines technique with ocean awareness and wave selection, giving students reasons for their decisions as well as feedback on their movements.
What a lesson looks like
Beginner private lessons open with beach practice covering paddling, standing and water safety. More experienced surfers discuss the skills they want to improve before working on them in the ocean. Board choice and lesson structure are adapted to the student, and personal equipment is welcome.
A North County location chosen for your level
The academy works across several coastal communities rather than assigning every student to one fixed break. Ask which beach suits your current paddling and wave-catching ability. Keep the confirmed meeting point handy, especially if you are unfamiliar with the area.
Four towns, four different kinds of beach
The academy's range runs from Del Mar's river-mouth sandbars north to Carlsbad's state beaches, and those beaches do not behave alike. Del Mar's banks depend on how the San Dieguito River has deposited sand, D Street mixes sand with reef patches that show at lower tides, and Carlsbad's beach breaks pick up both northwest and south swells. Our break data puts the forgiving size for most of this stretch at roughly 1–4 ft, with low-to-mid tide usually best. That spread is the point: a coach can match the beach to the student rather than the other way around.
Who it’s best for
A useful option for surfers who want individual attention and a specific learning goal. Families can also ask about group or semi-private formats. Describe what you can already do so the session starts at the right level.
Local tips before you go
Explain your recent surfing experience when booking, including the board you ride and what you find difficult. If bringing your own board, ask whether it fits the planned session. Allow time to find the meeting point before instruction begins.
Check the surf before your session
Review the forecast for the beach the academy confirms, then ask how those conditions affect your learning plan. A session aimed at first-time wave riding may need a different location from one focused on turns or advanced maneuvers.
