About California Surf Experience
California Surf Experience runs private lessons and longer, all-day surf adventures out of Laguna Beach. The school describes its instructors as expert and CPR-certified, and every lesson includes a surfboard, a wetsuit and an hour and a half of coaching. Lessons are open to surfers 6 and older.
Laguna is a different kind of beginner coastline from the long, open sand beaches farther north in Orange County. Its shoreline is broken into small coves between rocky headlands, so where you surf on a given day matters as much as how big the waves are. A local school that picks the right cove for the conditions is a big part of what you're paying for.
What a lesson looks like
Expect the same basic order most good schools follow: gear fitting, a short talk on the beach about waves and currents, practicing the pop-up on the sand, then time in the whitewater with your instructor pushing you into waves and coaching each attempt. Ninety minutes is long enough to get several standing rides without getting worn out.
Private lessons put one instructor on one surfer, which suits nervous first-timers and kids. The group price drops the cost per person when friends or family book together.
Reading Laguna's waves before you book
Laguna faces more to the southwest than most of Orange County, so summer south swells reach it well, while big winter northwest swells are partly blocked. That's why summer is usually the most reliable learning season here. The coves also change fast with the tide: rocks and reef appear at low tide, and some beaches lose most of their sand at high tide. A mid tide is usually the friendliest.
Our closest forecast is Aliso Creek, at the south end of Laguna. Use it as a guide for size, swell direction and wind. For a first lesson look for 1–3 ft and a Poor-to-Fair rating with light morning wind. A big Good or Epic day at Aliso is usually too much for beginners in the coves.
Who it's best for
Visitors staying in Laguna who want to learn close to their hotel, families with kids 6 and up, and anyone who wants a full-day surf outing rather than a quick lesson. If you want to surf a long sandy beach instead of a cove, look at the Huntington Beach and Dana Point schools too.
Local tips
Laguna parking is mostly metered and fills quickly in summer, so arrive early. Wear sandals or booties for walking over rocks, and watch for stingrays on sandy bottoms; shuffle your feet when you walk in. Water is warmest from July to October. Confirm the meeting spot with the school, since it can change with the conditions.
