About Ventura Makos Surf Camp
Ventura Makos Surf Camp teaches technique, safety and surf etiquette to surfers of all ages around Ventura County. It runs summer camps at $350 a week as well as private and group lessons, and boards and wetsuits are provided.
Etiquette is a big part of the program, and that matters in Ventura, where the best point waves get crowded. Learning who has the right of way and how to paddle out without getting in the way makes you a welcome surfer anywhere.
Camps and lessons
A 90-minute private lesson is $150, and group lessons are $100–$125 per person. Week-long summer camps give kids time to build skills day by day: paddling, catching waves, standing up, ocean safety and lineup rules.
Mondo's and Silver Strand
The camp teaches at two very different beaches. Mondo's, north of Ventura, is a gentle cobblestone point where small waves peel slowly. It prefers west and northwest swells and a mid to higher tide. Silver Strand, in Oxnard by Channel Islands Harbor, is a sandy beach break between jetties that catches more summer south swell, so it can have waves when the points are flat.
Having both means the camp can pick the better beach for the day. Check our Mondo's and Silver Strand forecasts for 1–3 ft and light wind. Mornings are usually cleanest.

Local tips
Bring sunscreen, a towel and water, and booties for the cobblestones at Mondo's. Ventura water is cold much of the year, but wetsuits are provided. Check our water-quality notes after rain.
