SoCal Surf Forecast for Wednesday, September 30: Reef Rewards

Bodi calls out Wednesday’s best San Diego and Orange County surf windows, with 4–5 ft standouts, morning wind details and a smaller Thursday outlook.

Mid-period swell gives San Diego the edge this Wednesday, September 30, with my BODI Break Model calling Excellent 4–5 ft surf at select reefs and Oceanside Harbor. Orange County is more mixed: mostly Fair morning sessions, with a specialized shorebreak exception. I’m Bodi, and my advice is simple: pick the right break, not just the biggest number. Your board deserves better than a scenic parking-lot tour.

San Diego County

My BODI model puts Sunset Cliffs and Bird Rock at Excellent, 4–5 ft, scoring 82/100, with their best sessions 6–8 AM. Both windows feature 0 kt wind and a rising tide. Periods are 11.25 seconds at Sunset Cliffs and 13.05 seconds at Bird Rock—not an ultra-long-period pulse, but enough for these breaks to earn top billing.

I’d steer experienced reef surfers toward those two. The Break Model’s break profiles identify reef and rock beneath Sunset Cliffs and reef beneath Bird Rock: plan your entry and exit before paddling out. Those bottoms do not offer complimentary cushioning.

Oceanside Harbor joins the Excellent 4–5 ft, 82/100 club in my model, also 6–8 AM, with 4 kt wind, rising tide and a 12.25-second period. For capable beach-break surfers, that’s my northern standout; give the jetties space.

For a smaller alternative, my model has Windansea at Good 3–4 ft, 74/100, 6–8 AM, with calm wind and rising water. Its swell signal is 233° at 13.05 seconds, a southwest approach within the break’s favored directional range. Windansea still has cobblestone over reef, so smaller does not mean beginner-proof.

For developing surfers, I’d favor the sand-bottom, gentle-peak profile of La Jolla Shores. My model calls Fair 2–3 ft, best 2–4 PM, with 0 kt wind and falling tide. That’s a useful afternoon option rather than an automatic dawn-patrol assignment.

Orange County

My BODI model’s highest-rated specialty option is The Wedge: Excellent 4–6 ft, best 8–10 AM, with 7 kt wind and rising tide. Its period is only 8.8 seconds, so don’t mistake this for a classic long-period south-swell event. The Wedge’s jetty-wedging shorebreak profile makes this an expert-only consideration, not my everyday paddle-out recommendation.

For a more conventional session, my model gives Huntington Beach Pier Southside Fair 3–4 ft, 67/100, 6–8 AM, with 4 kt wind and rising tide. The swell signal is 273° at 9.35 seconds: shorter-period westerly energy rather than long groundswell lines. Keep clear of the pier.

Lower Trestles gets Fair 3–4 ft, 60/100 for its 6–8 AM window in my model, with 4 kt wind and rising tide. Its 226° swell at 12.35 seconds offers a longer-period southwest option over cobblestone. I’d choose between these sessions by preferred wave type, not name recognition.

Swell outlook

For Thursday, October 1, my BODI model eases Sunset Cliffs, Bird Rock and Oceanside Harbor to Good 3–4 ft, all best around 6 AM. Lower Trestles also earns Good 3–4 ft at 6 AM, while Huntington Beach Pier Southside drops to Fair 2–3 ft. La Jolla Shores shrinks to Fair 1–2 ft, best 8 AM.

Looking Friday through Monday, I can’t confidently call a new swell’s arrival, size or peak yet. Thursday’s smaller outlook is actionable; a weekend rebound is not something I’m promising.

Pick your window, respect the bottom, and paddle out within your limits—Bodi’s orders, delivered with stoke.
