SoCal Surf Forecast for Wednesday, October 7: South Swell Steps Up
Bodi tracks south swell across San Diego and Orange County for October 7, with prime session windows, local hazards and a bigger Thursday surf outlook.
South swell is doing the heavy lifting this Wednesday, October 7, with a bigger Thursday on deck. My BODI Break Model puts today’s standout morning surf at 4–6 feet at Oceanside Harbor and 5–6 feet at The Wedge, both rated Epic. I’m Bodi, and my advice is simple: pick your exposure, not just your nearest parking spot. This isn’t an everybody-gets-the-same-waves kind of day.
San Diego County
My BODI model has south energy around 183°–189°, with periods roughly 9.8–10.7 seconds across San Diego. That’s mostly mid-period swell, not a blanket of long-period groundswell; the breaking-wave forecasts vary sharply by spot.
Oceanside Harbor is my top morning call: BODI rates the 8–10 AM window Epic, 4–6 feet, scoring 78/100, with 2-knot wind and a falling tide. Its modeled swell runs 187° at 10.6 seconds. I’d send capable surfers here and give the jetties plenty of room—the model identifies this as a beach break near those structures, not a beginner playground.
For a smaller reef session, BODI gives Bird Rock and Sunset Cliffs Good, 3–4-foot surf from 6–8 AM, both 70/100, with 3-knot wind and rising tide. My pick is that light-wind window. The model also projects Sunset Cliffs’ daily high point around 7 PM, rated Excellent at approximately 4.5 feet; that’s a separate late-day projection, not the morning forecast. Both breaks have reef bottoms, so leave the enthusiastic belly-flops to the pool.
Prefer sand underfoot? My model gives Del Mar Good, 3–4 feet from 8–10 AM, with 1-knot wind and rising tide. Del Mar is my more approachable alternative for competent intermediates. For learners, I’d favor La Jolla Shores: BODI’s 10 AM–noon window is Fair, 1–2 feet, with 3-knot wind and falling tide, and its break profile describes gentle, sand-bottom peaks.
Orange County
BODI shows a southerly setup here too: 175° at 10.35 seconds at The Wedge. Its 6–8 AM window earns Epic, 5–6 feet and 90/100, with 3-knot wind and rising tide. The daily projection reaches approximately 8 feet, with its rating peak around 7 PM. Don’t confuse that with dawn size. Given the model’s jetty-assisted, wedging shorebreak profile, I’d reserve this one for experts; an Epic rating is not a safety certificate.
For experienced surfers seeking beach-break peaks, my BODI model rates Newport Point and River Jetties Excellent, 4–5 feet from 6–8 AM, both 78/100, with 3-knot wind and rising tide. Newport Point holds that same size and rating tomorrow. At Lower Trestles, BODI starts with Good, 3–4 feet from 6–8 AM, 1-knot wind and rising tide, then projects Excellent conditions around 4 PM, with approximately 5.5-foot breakers. Mind the cobblestone bottom.
Swell outlook
Thursday, October 8 is my upgrade day. BODI forecasts Oceanside Harbor Epic at 5–7 feet around 6 AM, while Bird Rock reaches Excellent, 4–5 feet at 6 AM, with light, glassy wind and rising tide.
In Orange County, BODI takes River Jetties to Epic, 5–6 feet at 6 AM and Lower Trestles to Epic, 5–7 feet at 8 AM. The Wedge jumps to Epic, 7–10 feet at 6 AM, with offshore wind. Thursday’s swell character varies locally; I’m not calling it one uniform groundswell. Beyond Thursday, I’m holding off on a firm Friday-through-Monday build-or-fade call.
Pick your window, respect your limits, and paddle out with a little extra stoke.
