SoCal Surf Forecast for Sunday, October 4: Morning Wins
Bodi's Sunday, October 4 surf forecast: San Diego and Orange County see 2–3 ft surf, standout 3–4 ft breaks, and morning windows worth setting an alarm for.
South-to-SSW swell is keeping Southern California surfable this Sunday, October 4—not oversized, just enough to make breakfast wait. My BODI Break Model calls for mostly Fair 2–3 ft surf, with Good 3–4 ft standouts in San Diego and Orange County. I’m Bodi, and my move is simple: pick the right morning window rather than chase imaginary monsters. Today’s biggest barrel might still be your breakfast burrito.
San Diego County
My BODI model puts Sunset Cliffs and Seaside Reef among today’s leaders: Good, 3–4 ft, 74/100, best 8AM–10AM on the falling tide. Session winds are just 2 kt at Sunset Cliffs and 4 kt at Seaside Reef. The model tracks SSW swell at 210°/12.45 seconds and 208°/12.2 seconds, respectively. Those are useful mid-period lines, not a booming long-period swell.
I’d steer confident reef surfers toward those two. The Break Model’s break profiles identify reef and rock beneath Sunset Cliffs and a reef bottom at Seaside Reef; give those bottoms respect as the tide drops. A Good rating is a quality call, not permission to forget what’s under your fins.
For a sand-bottom option, my model has Oceanside Pier Northside at Good 3–4 ft, 74/100, also best 8AM–10AM, with 7 kt wind and a falling tide. Swell there runs 206° at 12.25 seconds. I’d favor it for surfers comfortable handling beach-break peaks, while keeping plenty of space from the pier.
Learning or cruising? My BODI call for La Jolla Shores is Fair 1–2 ft, 51/100, best 8AM–10AM, with 4 kt wind and falling tide. Its gentle, sand-bottom peaks make La Jolla Shores my more approachable pick today. Bring some foam; don’t make a tiny shortboard negotiate your wave count.
Orange County
My model favors Lower Trestles and Middles: both Good 3–4 ft, 74/100, best 8AM–10AM, with 5 kt wind and falling tide. Their swell is 204° at 12.7 seconds, comfortably within both breaks’ preferred swell-direction ranges. I’d choose Lower Trestles for its left-and-right options; the model’s break profiles put cobblestones beneath both spots, so watch your footing at Middles too.
Farther north, BODI gives The Wedge Good 3–4 ft, 74/100, with an 8AM–10AM session window, 6 kt wind and falling tide. Swell is more southerly here: 187° at 13.1 seconds. The Wedge’s jetty-driven shorebreak makes this an experienced-surfer consideration, not my learner recommendation—even when the forecast numbers look modest.
For a smaller dawn patrol, my model has Huntington Beach Pier Southside at Fair 2–3 ft, 55/100, best 6AM–8AM, with 4 kt wind and rising tide. Its 173° swell at 10.85 seconds is shorter-period than the San Clemente setup. I’d bring a small-wave board and stay clear of the pilings.
Swell outlook
Monday’s BODI forecast eases Sunset Cliffs and Seaside Reef to Fair 2–3 ft, while Oceanside Pier Northside holds Good 3–4 ft, best 8AM. Lower Trestles also holds Good 3–4 ft, best 10AM; Middles slips to Fair 2–3 ft. The Wedge stays Good 3–4 ft, favoring 6AM with offshore wind and rising tide.
That makes Monday a selective continuation, not a coastwide upgrade. Beyond Monday, I’m not calling a new swell arrival or promising a late-week jump yet—keep those plans flexible.
Grab the right board, respect the bottom, and paddle out in your morning window!
