SoCal Surf Forecast for Friday, October 23: Newport Leads

Bodi calls Friday's best surf in San Diego and Orange County: standout Newport peaks, strong Oceanside sessions, light winds and Saturday's swell outlook.

South-to-southwest swell is putting Friday, October 23’s best surf within reach—if you pick your beach. My BODI model gives Newport Point an Epic 4–6 ft dawn window and Oceanside Harbor Excellent 4–5 ft, while much of southern San Diego stays smaller and Fair. I’m Bodi, and today’s assignment is simple: match the swell to the spot before your breakfast burrito becomes your entire morning plan.

San Diego County

My BODI pick for size and quality is Oceanside Harbor: Excellent, 4–5 ft, 74/100, best 6–8 AM, with 4 kt wind and a rising tide. The model puts the period at 12.6 seconds. I’d steer confident surfers toward Oceanside Harbor, keeping clear of the jetties rather than treating them like slalom gates.

For a smaller right-hand option, my model has Swami's at Good, 3–4 ft, 70/100, also 6–8 AM, with 4 kt wind and rising water. Swell there runs 214° at 12.65 seconds—southwest energy, not the west-to-northwest angle the break ideally favors. Swami's still earns the session recommendation; its reef bottom earns your attention on the way in and out.

Sleeping in? My BODI window for Windansea is 10 AM–noon: Fair, 2–4 ft, with 4 kt wind and a falling tide. Its 216° swell at 12.5 seconds fits the break’s directional appetite but falls short of its preferred 14-second-plus period. I’d choose Windansea for surfers comfortable over cobblestone and reef, not a first lesson.

For learners, I’d instead consider La Jolla Shores, whose gentle sand-bottom peaks are the friendlier setup in my break guide. BODI’s 6–8 AM session forecast is only Poor, 1–2 ft, with 4 kt wind and rising water: bring foam and modest expectations.

Orange County

My BODI standout is Newport Point: Epic, 4–6 ft, 82/100, best 6–8 AM with 4 kt wind and a rising tide. The swell is 194° at 12.8 seconds. That angle fits its southern exposure, although the period is below its preferred 14 seconds. I’d reserve Newport Point’s bigger session for capable surfers; an Epic rating is not a permission slip from the ocean.

Nearby, my model gives The Wedge Excellent, 6–8 ft, 83/100, during the same 6–8 AM window, with 4 kt wind and rising water. It shares that 194°, 12.8-second swell. My break guide identifies jetty-amplified shorebreak here, so The Wedge is an expert-only proposition—not the place to test a newly discovered talent for optimism.

For another strong beach-break choice, BODI puts Huntington St. at Excellent, 4–5 ft, best 6–8 AM, with 4 kt wind and rising tide. Later starters get 17th Street: Excellent, 4–5 ft, 82/100, best 10 AM–noon, with calm wind and falling water. That’s my late-morning pick, not a consolation prize.

Swell outlook

My Saturday, October 24 call favors early sessions but generally smaller surf at today’s standouts. BODI drops Oceanside Harbor and Newport Point to Good, 3–4 ft at 6 AM on mid-period WSW swell; the Harbor gets offshore wind, Newport Point light, glassy wind. Swami's holds Good, 3–4 ft at 6 AM on SW swell with offshore wind and rising tide.

The Wedge stays Excellent at 4–6 ft Saturday, according to BODI, despite 4 kt onshore wind at its 6 AM best hour. Beyond Saturday, I’m leaving Sunday through Thursday’s swell call open rather than promising an unconfirmed pulse.

Pick your window, respect your limits, and paddle out with a little extra stoke.
