SoCal Surf Forecast for Wednesday, October 21: South Swell

South swell favors Orange County today, with 4–5 ft surf at standout breaks. Bodi picks San Diego sessions and tracks Thursday's improving surf potential.

South-to-SSW swell puts Orange County ahead on size this Wednesday, October 21: my BODI Break Model calls for standout 4–5 ft surf, while San Diego’s better options run 3–4 ft. Thursday brings an upgrade at select breaks, including Oceanside. I’m Bodi, and today’s assignment is timing—not driving past perfectly good waves while your breakfast burrito goes cold.

These are breaking-wave heights, and the ratings below describe the best session windows—not an all-day promise.

San Diego County

My BODI model makes Oceanside Pier Northside and Oceanside Harbor the county’s strongest morning picks: Good, 3–4 ft, 70/100, from 8–10 AM, with 4 kt wind and a falling tide. The swell runs 197° at 12.25 seconds. I’d aim near 9 AM and give the pier and harbor jetties plenty of room; concrete does not practice surf etiquette.

For an earlier paddle, BODI puts Ocean Beach Pier and Sunset Cliffs at Good, 3–4 ft, 66/100, during 6–8 AM, with 4 kt wind and rising water. Both carry 195° swell at 11.7 seconds. Ocean Beach Pier offers a sand-bottom option away from the structure; Sunset Cliffs has reef and rock underneath, according to my break profiles, so I’d reserve that choice for surfers comfortable with rocky terrain.

For learners and mellow-board missions, my model favors the gentler sand-bottom peaks at La Jolla Shores: Fair, 1–2 ft, 6–8 AM, 5 kt wind and a rising tide. La Jolla Shores isn’t winning the size contest, but that’s the point. BODI’s day-level winds reach 11.8 kt around Oceanside and 13.8 kt at the Shores, compared with those lighter session windows—another reason I’m planning around the morning.

Orange County

My BODI model gives Huntington Beach Pier Southside an Excellent 4–5 ft, 78/100 window from 8–10 AM: 4 kt wind, falling tide and 180° swell at 11.9 seconds. Huntington Beach Pier Southside is my later-morning pick for capable surfers; stay clear of the pilings rather than treating them like slalom gates.

Earlier, BODI calls San Clemente Pier Excellent, 4–5 ft, 74/100, from 6–8 AM, with rising water and 6 kt wind. Its swell is 190° at 11.8 seconds. Newport Point earns the same rating, size and score in that window, with 5 kt wind and 186° swell at 11.9 seconds. I’d put experienced surfers on these options rather than send a first-timer chasing the highest score.

The specialist call is The Wedge: BODI rates its 6–8 AM window Epic, 5–7 ft, 94/100, with 5 kt wind and rising tide. But The Wedge is jetty-amplified shorebreak in my break profile—not a beginner-friendly invitation. “Epic” describes the modeled session, not the safety margin. My model also forecasts 0.551 inches of rain at San Clemente Pier today; check current local advisories before paddling.

Swell outlook

For Thursday, October 22, my BODI model lifts Oceanside Pier Northside and Oceanside Harbor to Excellent, 4–5 ft around 6 AM, with mid-period SSW swell, offshore wind and rising tide. Ocean Beach Pier and Sunset Cliffs hold Good, 3–4 ft around 6 AM.

In Orange County, BODI upgrades Lower Trestles to Excellent, 4–5 ft around 8 AM Thursday, pairing mid-period south swell with offshore wind and falling tide. Newport Point stays Excellent, 4–5 ft around 6 AM. Beyond Thursday, I’m not calling a fresh pulse or weekend fade yet; Friday through Monday remain a wait-and-check outlook.

Pick your window, respect your limits, and paddle out with some stoke.
