SoCal Surf Forecast for Tuesday, October 20: South Swell Delivers
South swell brings standout surf to Oceanside and Orange County this Tuesday. Bodi picks the best breaks, session windows and Wednesday's surf prospects.
South-to-SSW swell is putting Tuesday, October 20’s best surf within reach—if you pick your beach carefully. My BODI model favors 3–5-foot surf at Oceanside Harbor and 4–5-foot waves at Lower Trestles, both rated Excellent in their prime windows. Much of San Diego is smaller, while Orange County has some extra muscle. I’m Bodi, and today’s mission is simple: find the right exposure, not the biggest parking-lot rumor.
San Diego County
Oceanside Harbor gets my top county call: BODI forecasts Excellent, 3–5 feet, scoring 74/100 from 8–10 AM, with 3-knot wind and a falling tide. Nearby Oceanside Pier Northside earns Good, 3–4 feet and 70/100 in that same window. My model puts the pier’s swell direction at 196° with a 12.3-second period—mid-period SSW energy, not a long-period freight train. Give the harbor jetties and pier pilings plenty of room.
Farther south, my BODI call for Bird Rock is Good, 3–4 feet, 70/100 from 8–10 AM, with 3-knot wind and falling water. Its 195° swell runs at 12.1 seconds. I’d favor reef-comfortable surfers here: BODI’s break profile identifies a reef bottom, and rocks have famously terrible customer service.
For a later session, BODI has Blacks Beach at Fair, 3–4 feet from 10 AM–noon, with 4-knot wind and a falling tide. The model’s 195°, 12.25-second swell sits outside this powerful beach break’s preferred 250°–300° window; don’t mistake rideable size for a classic west-swell setup.
Want something gentler? My model gives La Jolla Shores Poor, 1–2 feet from 8–10 AM, with 4-knot wind and falling water. Its gentle, sand-bottom peaks make it my practice-oriented alternative, not my shortboard-performance pick.
Orange County
My BODI model puts Lower Trestles and San Clemente Pier at Excellent, 4–5 feet and 74/100 from 6–8 AM, both with 4-knot wind and a rising tide. The San Clemente swell picture is mid-period southerly energy: BODI has nearby T-Street at 188° and 12.1 seconds, producing Good, 3–4-foot surf in that same early window.
I’d send confident surfers toward those stronger options, while remembering BODI’s break profiles: Lower Trestles has cobblestones, and San Clemente Pier has a rather substantial obstacle called a pier. Leave space around both.
For maximum size, BODI rates The Wedge Excellent, 6–8 feet, 82/100 from 6–8 AM, with 5-knot wind and rising water. Its 12.3-second period is shorter than its preferred 15-plus seconds, but the modeled breaking surf still demands respect. This jetty-amplified shorebreak is an expert proposition—not a beginner upgrade package.
Swell outlook
For Wednesday, October 21, my BODI forecast keeps mid-period SSW swell in San Diego and southerly swell in Orange County, with selective easing. Oceanside Harbor drops to Good, 3–4 feet around 8 AM, with offshore wind and falling tide; Oceanside Pier Northside matches that call. Bird Rock holds Good, 3–4 feet around 6 AM with offshore wind and rising water.
BODI eases Lower Trestles to Fair, 3–4 feet around 8 AM, but San Clemente Pier holds Excellent, 4–5 feet then; both favor offshore wind and falling tide. The Wedge remains Excellent at 5–7 feet around 6 AM, with cross-shore wind and rising water. Beyond Wednesday, a new swell arrival or weekend size trend remains unconfirmed—I’m not promising a pulse I can’t back up.
Pick your window, match the break to your ability, and paddle out with a little room for everyone.
