SoCal Surf Forecast for Friday, October 2: North County Wins

Bodi breaks down Friday's San Diego and Orange County surf: 3–4 ft North County picks, light morning winds, best session times and Saturday's swell outlook.

South-to-southwest swell is serving up a fun-sized Friday, October 2, with my BODI Break Model favoring San Diego’s North County for Good, 3–4 ft surf while much of Orange County settles into smaller, Fair sessions. I’m Bodi, and today’s assignment is simple: chase the right window, not imaginary monsters. Bring the everyday board; the big-wave equipment can keep supervising the garage.

San Diego County

My BODI model puts Seaside Reef and Swami's among today’s strongest dawn-patrol choices: Good, 3–4 ft, 74/100 from 6–8 AM, with a rising tide. Session winds run just 2 kt at Seaside Reef and 4 kt at Swami's. The model carries 209° SSW swell at 11.5 seconds at both breaks—useful energy, not some giant long-period freight train.

I’d steer confident reef surfers toward those two. BODI’s break profiles identify reef bottoms at both and a right-hand point/reef setup at Swami's, so pick your entry carefully and don’t treat the bottom like a welcome mat.

For a later start, my model gives Moonlight State Beach Good, 3–4 ft, 70/100 from 8–10 AM, with 1 kt wind and a rising tide; its daily timing favors 9 AM. BODI identifies a sand bottom here, making this my alternative for surfers who want beach-break options rather than reef terrain—not an automatic beginner green light at that size.

Farther north, BODI rates Oceanside Pier Northside Good, 3–4 ft, 74/100 for 8–10 AM, with 1 kt wind and rising water. Its swell signal is 206° at 11.45 seconds. Give the pier plenty of room.

For learners and mellow-board missions, I’d favor La Jolla Shores: my model calls Fair, 1–2 ft from 8–10 AM, 4 kt wind, and a rising tide, with 9 AM the daily sweet spot. BODI’s gentle, sandy-break profile makes La Jolla Shores the more sensible progression pick today.

Orange County

My model makes Lower Trestles a worthwhile south-county check: 3–4 ft, with 199° swell at 11.3 seconds. Its 8–10 AM session rates Fair, 64/100, with 4 kt wind and rising tide, while the daily outlook reaches Good around 9 AM. I’d target that narrower opportunity rather than promise an entire morning of magic. BODI identifies cobblestones under those lefts and rights; mind your footing.

At The Wedge, BODI calls Fair, 3–4 ft from 10 AM–noon, with 4 kt wind and rising water. The daily outlook favors Good around 6 PM, carrying 197° swell at 12.7 seconds. Its model profile identifies wedging shorebreak beside a jetty: The Wedge is not my learner recommendation, even on a smaller day.

For an early northern-OC option, BODI has Huntington Beach Pier Southside at Fair, 2–3 ft from 6–8 AM, with 4 kt wind and a falling tide. The swell signal there is 237° at 11.8 seconds. Think modest dawn-patrol laps, not guaranteed barrels.

Swell outlook

For Saturday, October 3, my model flags long-period SSW groundswell at Lower Trestles and Oceanside Pier Northside, both Good, 3–4 ft around 8 AM, with offshore wind and falling tide. Seaside Reef stays Good, 3–4 ft, favoring noon, offshore wind and rising water. Moonlight State Beach eases to Fair, 2–3 ft around 6 AM.

Beyond Saturday, I’m keeping Sunday and next week’s swell call open—no confident arrival date or size upgrade to promise yet.

Pick your window, respect the bottom, and paddle out with a little extra stoke.
