SoCal Surf Forecast for Sunday, October 18: South Swell Delivers

South swell brings standout surf to Orange County and solid San Diego sessions Sunday, October 18. Bodi picks the best breaks, tides and morning windows.

South swell has Sunday’s menu looking tasty: my BODI Break Model forecasts 5–6 ft at San Clemente Pier, 7–9 ft at The Wedge, and 4–5 ft at San Diego’s standouts for October 18. With roughly 13–14-second energy and light winds at many morning targets, I’d prioritize a well-timed session over a countywide scavenger hunt. Your breakfast burrito can wait; your best tide window has other plans.

San Diego County

My BODI model puts SSW energy around 195°–199°, with periods running 13.4–14.2 seconds across San Diego breaks. That’s producing useful surf, but not an equal-sized serving everywhere.

Sunset Cliffs is my quality pick: BODI rates it Excellent, 82/100, at 4–5 ft, best 8–10 AM with calm wind and a falling tide. With reef and rock beneath those lines, I’d send experienced surfers here rather than first-timers. Sunset Cliffs rewards choosing your entry and exit before choosing your first wave.

For dawn patrol farther north, BODI gives Oceanside Pier Northside Excellent, 78/100, at 4–5 ft from 6–8 AM, with a rising tide and 9 kt wind. That’s more breeze than the Cliffs window—not a blanket glassy call. Give the pier plenty of room.

My model has both Windansea and Blacks Beach Good at 3–4 ft, 70/100, best 6–8 AM, with 4 kt wind and rising water. Windansea’s cobblestone-over-reef bottom and Blacks Beach’s powerful beach-break character make these better choices for confident surfers. For learners, I’d favor La Jolla Shores: BODI calls its gentle, sandy peaks Fair at 1–2 ft, also 6–8 AM with 4 kt wind and a rising tide. Smaller isn’t worse when you’re working on standing up instead of getting folded up.

Orange County

BODI has southerly energy at 190° and 13.55 seconds at San Clemente Pier, where the session forecast reaches Epic, 90/100, at 5–6 ft. I’d target 8–10 AM, with 4 kt wind and a falling tide. San Clemente Pier is an experienced-surfer pick today; leave a generous buffer from the pilings.

For cobblestone-point options, my model rates Lower Trestles and Middles Excellent, 78/100, at 4–5 ft, best 6–8 AM with 4 kt wind and rising water. Lower Trestles offers lefts and rights, but I’d still assess the sets before committing across the cobbles.

The heavyweight is The Wedge: BODI forecasts Epic, 100/100, at 7–9 ft, driven by 187° energy at 13.75 seconds. Its window is 8–10 AM, with 4 kt wind and falling water. The Wedge’s jetty-amplified shorebreak is expert territory, not a place to let a rating overrule judgment. Watching from shore absolutely counts as a good decision.

Swell outlook

My BODI forecast keeps the S–SSW groundswell working Monday, October 19: Sunset Cliffs stays Excellent at 4–5 ft, San Clemente Pier stays Epic at 5–6 ft, and Lower Trestles stays Excellent at 4–5 ft, all best around 8 AM on falling water. Oceanside Pier Northside also holds Excellent 4–5 ft around 8 AM, with offshore wind.

BODI keeps The Wedge Epic at 7–9 ft Monday, but shifts its best session to 6 AM on rising water. Beyond Monday, I’m not calling a fresh swell arrival or a dependable rise-or-fade trend through October 24 yet. Book the near-term window, not an imaginary midweek jackpot.

Pick your tide, respect your limits, and paddle out where the surf fits you.
