SoCal Surf Forecast for Saturday, October 17: South Swell
South swell brings standout surf to Orange County and Oceanside this Saturday. Bodi picks the best windows, tide setups and spots for Sunday's follow-up.
Long-period south-to-SSW swell is serving up Saturday’s main course: 4–6 ft surf at standout Orange County breaks and 4–5 ft around Oceanside, according to my BODI Break Model. I’m Bodi, and my October 17 call is simple: pick your exposure and session window, not just the nearest parking space. The Wedge reaches an Epic 6–8 ft this morning—but that’s a spectator recommendation for most of us, not a permission slip.
San Diego County
My BODI session forecast puts Oceanside Pier Northside and Oceanside Harbor at Excellent, 4–5 ft, from 8–10 AM, scoring 78/100 with 3 kt wind and rising tide. Swell periods run 16.15 seconds. These are my picks for capable surfers seeking more size; give the pier and harbor jetties plenty of clearance. Oceanside Pier Northside gets my nod over a sleepy beach check farther south.
For dawn patrol, my model has Windansea at Good, 3–4 ft, from 6–8 AM, with 9 kt wind and rising tide. The swell runs 199° at 16.1 seconds—SSW energy with some patience between lines. Windansea’s cobblestone-over-reef bottom makes this a better choice for surfers comfortable around hard-bottom peaks, not first-day foam-board adventures.
Prefer smaller surf? BODI gives La Jolla Shores Fair, 1–2 ft, from 6–8 AM, with 9 kt wind and rising tide. Its gentle, sandy-bottom peaks make it my more approachable learning option. Fair can be excellent news when your main goal is standing up rather than starring in a wipeout compilation.
Sleeping in isn’t automatically a tactical error. My model favors Cardiff Reef 4–6 PM: Good, 3–4 ft, 74/100, with 4 kt wind and falling tide. Swell there runs 201° at 16.25 seconds. I’d save that session for surfers comfortable with reef terrain and watch a few sets before committing.
Orange County
My BODI morning call for Lower Trestles is Excellent, 4–5 ft, from 6–8 AM, with 3 kt wind and rising tide. The swell runs 191° at 14.05 seconds, well inside its south-through-west sweet spot. Lower Trestles offers lefts and rights over cobblestone; I’d send confident intermediates and experienced surfers here rather than learners.
For a later start, BODI rates San Clemente Pier Excellent, 4–6 ft, from 10 AM–noon, scoring 80/100 with just 1 kt wind and rising tide. That’s my standout late-morning target. Keep your takeoff zone clear of the pier; extra wave face is fun, extra structural engineering is not.
Farther north, my session forecast gives Huntington Beach Pier Southside Excellent, 4–5 ft, from 8–10 AM, with 3 kt wind and rising tide. Its swell runs nearly due south, 183°, at 14.9 seconds.
The heavyweight is The Wedge: BODI calls Epic, 6–8 ft, 93/100, from 6–8 AM, with 2 kt wind, rising tide and 187° swell at 14.2 seconds. Its jetty-shaped shorebreak is expert territory. Epic describes the surf—not everyone’s odds of a happy landing.
Swell outlook
My BODI Sunday forecast keeps the south/SSW groundswell working. Oceanside Harbor holds Excellent 4–5 ft around 8 AM with light, glassy wind and falling tide; Windansea stays Good 3–4 ft around 8 AM with offshore wind and falling tide.
Sunday’s bigger calls are San Clemente Pier at Epic 5–6 ft around 8 AM, and The Wedge at Epic 7–9 ft around 6 AM, both with light, glassy wind. Beyond Sunday, I’m leaving the week’s swell arrival and fade timing open rather than promising a pulse I can’t confirm.
Pick your window, respect your limits, and paddle out with a little stoke left for the next surfer.
