SoCal Surf Forecast for Thursday, October 15: South Swell
Bodi tracks Thursday’s south swell across San Diego and Orange County, with the best surf windows, local ratings, wind, tides and Friday’s outlook.
South-to-SSW swell is putting Orange County in the spotlight this Thursday, October 15. My BODI Break Model calls for 4–5 ft and Excellent at San Clemente Pier, while San Diego’s stronger options deliver Good, 3–4 ft surf. I’m Bodi, and today’s mission is picking the right stretch—not driving past perfectly good waves because your buddy texted a fire emoji.
San Diego County
My BODI model has Sunset Cliffs and Ocean Beach Pier at Good, 3–4 ft, scoring 74/100, with their best session 6–8 AM. Both windows carry 4 kt wind and a rising tide, with swell around 196° at 12.85 seconds. Sunset Cliffs gets my nod for experienced reef surfers; its reef-and-rock bottom deserves respect. At Ocean Beach Pier, give the pilings plenty of room.
Farther north, my model puts Oceanside Pier Northside at Good, 3–4 ft, 74/100, also best 6–8 AM, with 5 kt wind and incoming water. The swell there runs 197° at 12.55 seconds. I’d make Oceanside Pier Northside a priority for competent surfers wanting a beach-break session without chasing the biggest OC option.
For a smaller paddle, BODI gives Pacific Beach Fair, 2–3 ft, 55/100, with calm wind and a rising tide during 6–8 AM. Its 198°, 12.55-second swell makes Pacific Beach my lower-key alternative. Bring a board that helps you catch waves rather than one that merely looks fast on the roof.
For learners, I’d consider La Jolla Shores, whose gentle sand-bottom peaks fit that brief in my break model. Keep expectations modest: BODI rates its 6–8 AM window Poor at 1–2 ft, with 7 kt wind and a rising tide. Small does not automatically mean good.
Orange County
San Clemente Pier is my standout conventional surf pick: BODI rates its 6–8 AM window Excellent, 4–5 ft, 82/100, with 5 kt wind and a rising tide. I’d steer capable surfers here and keep beginners on smaller peaks elsewhere.
Nearby, my model gives Lower Trestles Good, 3–4 ft, 74/100, best 6–8 AM, with 7 kt wind and incoming water. Its 190°, 12.55-second swell sits inside the break’s preferred south-through-west range. Lower Trestles offers a smaller forecast than San Clemente Pier, though its cobblestone bottom still calls for careful footing.
Then there’s The Wedge: BODI’s highest rating is Epic, 5–7 ft, 94/100, with an 8–10 AM session window, 8 kt wind and a rising tide. The swell is 186° at 12.6 seconds. That rating is not a permission slip: the model identifies jetty-driven, wedging shorebreak here. I’d leave The Wedge to experienced specialists and happily judge the action from dry sand. My skeleton likes its current arrangement.
Swell outlook
For Friday, October 16, BODI favors long-period SSW groundswell at Oceanside Pier Northside, holding Good, 3–4 ft, with the best hour shifting to 4 PM, offshore wind and a falling tide. Lower Trestles gets the same size, rating and timing on long-period south groundswell.
My model keeps Sunset Cliffs Good at 3–4 ft around 6 AM, but eases Ocean Beach Pier to Fair, 2–3 ft around 8 AM. San Clemente Pier slips to Good, 3–4 ft around 4 PM. Beyond Friday, I’m withholding a weekend size call rather than promising mystery swell. Stoke is renewable; certainty isn’t.
Pick your window, respect your limits, and paddle out with a little aloha.
