SoCal Surf Forecast for Wednesday, October 14: South Swell Shines
Bodi calls the best Wednesday sessions across San Diego and Orange County, with south swell, light morning winds and standout surf before Thursday's dip.
South-to-SSW swell is putting Wednesday, October 14’s biggest opportunities in Orange County, while San Diego has worthwhile morning pockets. My BODI model calls 6–8 ft and Epic at The Wedge, versus 4–5 ft and Excellent at Sunset Cliffs. I’m Bodi, and my call is simple: choose your break carefully and catch the morning window. This is not an equal-opportunity wave buffet.
San Diego County
My BODI model puts Sunset Cliffs at the top: Excellent, 82/100, 4–5 ft from 6–8 AM, with 3 kt wind, a rising tide and a 12.9-second period. I’d steer experienced reef surfers toward Sunset Cliffs; the model’s reef-and-rock bottom description is reason enough to plan your entry and exit, not improvise them mid-set.
For La Jolla, BODI tracks 202° SSW energy at 12.9 seconds. Windansea and Blacks Beach both earn Good, 74/100, with 3–4 ft surf from 6–8 AM, 5 kt wind and rising water. Windansea’s preferred 200°–275° swell window catches that angle, although today’s period falls short of its preferred 14 seconds-plus. Blacks Beach favors more westerly swell, but still gets a useful model call. I’d leave both to surfers comfortable with reef peaks or powerful beach-break surf, respectively.
For a gentler option, my model has La Jolla Shores at Fair, 1–2 ft from 8–10 AM, with 3 kt wind and rising tide. Its sandy bottom and gentle peaks make La Jolla Shores my learner-friendly pick. Bring flotation; the shortboard can enjoy a personal day.
Orange County
My BODI model gives San Clemente Pier Epic, 86/100, 4–6 ft from 6–8 AM, with 7 kt wind and a rising tide. The swell there runs 192° at 12.9 seconds—southerly energy with enough period for worthwhile lines. I’d recommend San Clemente Pier for confident surfers today, keeping clear of the pilings.
Nearby, BODI rates Lower Trestles Excellent, 82/100, 4–5 ft from 6–8 AM, with lighter 4 kt wind and rising water. Its cobblestone point offers lefts and rights, according to my break model; I’d choose Lower Trestles for a performance session and watch my footing getting in.
The biggest call belongs to The Wedge: my model forecasts Epic, 97/100, 6–8 ft from 8–10 AM, with 2 kt wind and rising tide. Swell direction is 188° at 12.9 seconds, shorter than its preferred 15 seconds-plus but still producing the strongest modeled surf. The Wedge is wedging shorebreak beside a jetty—not a beginner upgrade package. I’d reserve the water for experienced specialists and happily recommend spectating.
For another option, BODI gives River Jetties Excellent, 82/100, 4–5 ft from 8–10 AM, also with 2 kt wind and rising tide.
Swell outlook
Thursday, October 15 trends smaller at many standouts in my BODI forecast. Sunset Cliffs and Lower Trestles ease to Good, 3–4 ft, best around 6 AM. San Clemente Pier stays Good at 3–5 ft, also best at 6 AM, with offshore wind and rising tide.
The Wedge retains Epic, 5–7 ft at 6 AM in my model. River Jetties slips to Fair, 3–4 ft at 8 AM, with 5 kt onshore wind despite rising water—a useful reminder that size alone doesn’t make the session. Beyond Thursday, I’m keeping new-swell timing and weekend size unconfirmed rather than promising a mystery groundswell.
Pick the window, match the wave to your ability, and paddle out with a little extra stoke.
