SoCal Surf Forecast for Monday, October 12: South Swell Picks

Bodi tracks south swell across San Diego and Orange County for October 12, with today's best surf windows, reef picks and Tuesday's dawn patrol upgrade.

South-to-southwest swell is giving Monday, October 12 some muscle—but picking the right break matters more than packing your lucky boardshorts. My BODI forecast puts Bird Rock at 5–6 feet and The Wedge at 7–9 feet during their target sessions, while smaller La Jolla beach breaks struggle. Today favors selective afternoon missions; Tuesday brings a stronger quality call with offshore or light, glassy wind. Those heights are breaking surf, not offshore swell measurements.

San Diego County

My BODI model has SSW swell at 207° and 13 seconds around Windansea, where the 2–4 PM session rates Fair, 4–5 feet, with 8-knot wind and a falling tide. Windansea likes low-to-medium incoming water, so this afternoon isn't its textbook tide setup. I'd leave its cobblestone-and-reef peaks to surfers comfortable over hard bottom.

For more punch, my session forecast favors Bird Rock: Good, 5–6 feet, 64/100, from 2–4 PM, with 7-knot wind and falling water. Its modeled period is 13 seconds. Sunset Cliffs also earns Good for 2–4 PM, at 4–5 feet, with 7-knot wind and a falling tide; the swell there runs 217° at 12.75 seconds. These are experienced-surfer picks. My break profiles identify reef at both, with rock also under Sunset Cliffs—neither bottom accepts apologies from your fins.

Farther north, BODI gives Oceanside Harbor Good, 4–6 feet, during 4–6 PM, with 9-knot wind and falling water. Its 198° swell at 13.25 seconds makes this another worthwhile size check. Keep your session clear of the jetties.

Want less horsepower? My forecast puts Coronado Beach at Fair, 2–3 feet, during 8–10 AM, with just 2-knot wind and a rising tide. That's my smaller-wave alternative for developing surfers, subject to an on-site check. La Jolla Shores is smaller still: Poor, 1–2 feet, for 2–4 PM. Small doesn't automatically mean good—sometimes the ocean orders the kids' meal.

Orange County

My BODI session standout for size is The Wedge: Good, 7–9 feet, 70/100, during noon–2 PM, with 11-knot wind and falling water. The swell is 197° at 12.7 seconds, shorter than this break's preferred 15-second-plus energy. Its jetty-wedged shorebreak makes this an expert-only proposition; watching from shore is a perfectly respectable power move.

For a less extreme session, BODI puts Lower Trestles at Fair, 4–5 feet, from 4–6 PM, with 8-knot wind and a falling tide. The 190° swell at 13.15 seconds fits its south-through-west exposure. I'd steer confident intermediates and advanced surfers toward those cobblestone-point lefts and rights.

Around Huntington, my session forecast gives Huntington St. Fair, 4–5 feet, and 17th Street Fair, 4–6 feet, both 4–6 PM with 7-knot wind and falling water. Their modeled periods are 12.7 and 12.55 seconds, respectively. These window-specific ratings aren't an all-day promise of pristine peaks.

Swell outlook

Tuesday, October 13 is my upgrade call. BODI projects Excellent, 4–5 feet, around 6 AM at Bird Rock, Sunset Cliffs, Oceanside Harbor and Lower Trestles. Offshore wind favors the southern picks; light, glassy wind helps Oceanside Harbor, with rising tides throughout.

In Orange County, my Tuesday forecast combines long-period south groundswell, offshore wind and rising water for Epic calls at The Wedge—7–9 feet, 8 AM—and Huntington St.—4–6 feet, 6 AM. 17th Street reaches Epic, 5–6 feet, 6 AM, on mid-period south swell. Beyond Tuesday, I'm holding off on calling another pulse or a fade into the weekend.

Pick your window, respect your limits, and I'll see you where the lines meet the sand.
