SoCal Surf Forecast for Sunday, October 11: Size Meets Wind
Sunday brings solid south-to-southwest surf to San Diego and Orange County. Bodi picks the best windows, flags wind and rain, and checks Monday's outlook.
South-to-southwest swell brings serious Sunday size, but wind makes timing the whole enchilada. My BODI model calls for 6–9 ft breaking surf at Oceanside Harbor and Huntington Beach Pier Southside during their afternoon windows today, October 11. Much of the swell runs around 12 seconds—not endless-period corduroy, but plenty of push. I’m Bodi, and today I’d hunt the better wind windows rather than automatically worship the dawn-patrol alarm.
San Diego County
My BODI pick for experienced surfers chasing size is Oceanside Harbor: Good, 6–9 ft, 2–4 PM, scoring 75/100 with 8 kt wind and a falling tide. The swell direction is 217° at 11.85 seconds. Give those jetties room; this is not where I’d schedule a first-ever pop-up lesson.
For the highest session labels, my model favors Del Mar Rivermouth and Seaside Reef: both Excellent, 4–6 ft, 2–4 PM, with 7 kt wind and falling water. Del Mar Rivermouth carries 217° swell at 12.05 seconds; Seaside Reef gets 223° at 11.85 seconds. Those Excellent calls apply to the session windows, not an all-day promise. I’d leave Seaside Reef’s reef-bottom takeoffs to surfers comfortable with that terrain.
Farther south, BODI has Sunset Cliffs at Good, 5–7 ft, 2–4 PM, with 8 kt wind and falling tide. Its 219° swell runs 11.95 seconds. Bird Rock also earns Good, 5–7 ft, 2–4 PM, with 9 kt wind, falling water and 207° swell at 11.95 seconds. Both are reef options; my advice is to watch several sets and plan your exit before committing.
Smaller doesn’t automatically mean sweeter: my model gives La Jolla Shores Poor, 3–4 ft, 6–8 AM, with 21 kt wind despite the rising tide. Beginners, I’d sit that window out. Your foam board did not sign up to become a kite.
Orange County
My BODI model puts Huntington Beach Pier Southside at Good, 6–9 ft, 2–4 PM, scoring 69/100 with 11 kt wind and a falling tide. Swell is 217° at 12.3 seconds. For a later option, 17th Street gets Good, 6–8 ft, 4–6 PM, also 69/100, with 9 kt wind and falling water. I’d reserve these bigger beach-break sessions for strong, experienced surfers and keep well clear of pier pilings.
Down south, BODI calls Lower Trestles Fair, 6–8 ft, noon–2 PM, with 13 kt wind and falling tide, on 183° south swell at 12 seconds. Size alone doesn’t buy quality. Lower Trestles is a better patience play for Monday than a guaranteed Sunday score.
Rain deserves attention, too: BODI forecasts approximately 1.50 inches at Oceanside Harbor and 0.92 inches at Huntington Beach Pier Southside today. Before paddling out, I’d check current water-quality notices—especially before choosing Del Mar Rivermouth. A surf rating isn’t a water-quality clearance.
Swell outlook
Monday gets smaller, with some better-rated morning opportunities. My model has Oceanside Harbor at Good, 4–5 ft, 6 AM, with 4 kt onshore wind and rising tide. Sunset Cliffs holds Good, 4–5 ft at 6 AM. Bird Rock improves to Excellent, 4–6 ft at 8 AM, with cross-shore wind and rising water.
BODI favors Lower Trestles Monday at Excellent, 4–5 ft, 6 AM, with long-period south groundswell, light/glassy wind and rising tide. Beyond Monday, I’m not calling a dependable size trend or another swell arrival yet—keep those later-week plans flexible.
Pick your window, respect your limits, and save some stoke for tomorrow.
